Operation Lone Star Celebrates Five-Year Anniversary
Historic mission started by Governor Greg Abbott leads to 87% reduction in illegal border crossings
On March 6, 2021, Governor Greg Abbott delivered on his promise to Texans to secure the southern border by establishing the most robust border security initiative led by any state in U.S. history: Operation Lone Star.
What began as a multi-agency effort to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s total refusal to defend the border has swiftly evolved into the gold-standard blueprint for President Trump’s whole-of-government mission to keep criminals, drugs, and weapons out of our country.
Today, Texas has a partner in the White House. Operation Lone Star personnel continue to work around-the-clock with federal partners across 67 Texas counties to stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas, and to detect and prevent transnational criminal activity between ports of entry.
President Biden ignored and enabled abuses of our immigration system. He and his administration championed open border policies that invited criminal illegal immigrants across our borders with open arms and Social Security Numbers, fueling a humanitarian crisis in our state, and in our nation, all while endangering the lives and livelihoods of Texans and Americans.
Since its inception five years ago, Operation Lone Star has led to over half a million illegal immigrant apprehensions and nearly 63,000 criminal arrests, with more than 50,500 felony charges. Also, in Texas’ fight against the fentanyl crisis, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard, through Operation Lone Star, have seized more than 862 million lethal doses of fentanyl — enough fentanyl to kill every man, woman, and child in the United States, Mexico, and Canada combined.
In fact, federal data revealed a sharp decline in fentanyl-involved deaths, with 40% fewer teens experiencing fatal overdoses.
On this landmark anniversary, Operation Lone Star represents an enduring commitment to the security and prosperity of Texans and Americans – guided by Governor Abbott and President Trump’s shared vision to make America safe again.
